Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman officially launched the instant Permanent Account Number (PAN) facility on May 28, 2020, which uses Aadhar Number based e-KYC.  The beta facility on the Income Tax Department's e-filing website was first introduced in February 2020.

Is a paperless, real-time basis facility.  According to the Income Tax Department, the time for allotting PAN through this facility is about 10 minutes.  Only those applicants who have a valid Aadhar Number and who have a mobile number registered with Aadhar, can use this facility.  This electronic PAN (e-PAN) will be issued to applicants free of charge, the department said on its Twitter handle.

 How to get online appointment for new Aadhaar Card, for free

 PAN is issued to applicants in PDF format, which is free of charge.  Applicant has to type his valid Aadhar Number and submit the generated OTP on the registered mobile number.  Once the process is complete, a 15-digit acknowledgment number is generated.  Once the request is submitted, the applicant can check the status of the request at any time by providing his / her valid Aadhar Number and can download the PAN on successful allocation.  The applicant will also get a copy of the PAN in the email ID registered with the Aadhar database.

How to apply for PAN Card

 Go to the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department.  Click here to go to the website.

 Click on 'Instant PAN through Aadhaar'.

 Click on Get New PAN.

 Fill your Aadhar Number in the given space, enter captcha and confirm.

 Applicant will receive an OTP on the registered Aadhaar mobile number;  Submit this OTP in a text box on the webpage.

 After submission, an acknowledgment number will be generated.  Keep this acknowledgment number for future reference.

 If successful, a message will be sent to the applicant's registered mobile number and email ID (registered with UIDAI and certified by OTP).  This message specifies the acknowledgment number.

 Also, this service is only available to people 18 years of age or older.  Companies, HUFs, partnership firms are not eligible for this facility.

 It is to be noted that if a person is found to be carrying two or more PAN cards, they are punished under Section 272B (1) of the Income Tax Act and will have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.
